Si tratta delle turbine a disco, con il tipo di palette che si toccano mediante una carenatura esterna, o anello esterno ("shroud", spesso lasciato direttamente in inglese), cioè dei segmenti di un anello che funge da protezione esterna alle palette:

Quando queste protezioni si disallineano e si sovrappongono tra loro, si determina lo "shingling", come spiegano questi due brani in inglese:

Avevo trovato fin dall'inizio un riferimento dal portoghese che parla di pale con "rugosidade", ma oltre al fatto che non è detto che il termine si possa tradurre letteralmente anche in questo caso, non è detto che quella traduzione sia corretta, mentre i riferimenti perfettamente attendibili dall'inglese (enciclopedia e brevetto), parlano chiaramente di del fenomeno di sovrapposizione già spiegato sopra.
