French term

équilibre limite de déformation

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering relating to shallow foundations
Belgian university's description of an architectural course about applications of soil mechanics. Under the content section:

- Fondations superficielles : Equilibre limite de déformation : distribution des contraintes dans le sol (Boussinesq, Newmark, Steinbrenner). Calcul des tassements. Sources de tassements différentiels
- Fondations superficielles : équilibre limite de rupture, équation canonique du pouvoir portant des fondations directes, facteurs correctifs, calcul à partir du CPT

I have an old translation but this phrase has actually been omitted there. In the second shallow foundations item, I think "équilibre limite de rupture" is equivalent to "ultimate loads" so could this be "ultimate deformation", "ultimate strain"?

MoiraB (asker) Jul 25, 2018:
@Tony Thanks, Tony. Will probably raise this with the client, as GDT offers only "distortion limit" for limite de déformation in an aluminium context.
Tony M Jul 24, 2018:
@ Asker I can't give you a definitive answer, but I just wanted to say that I don't think your suggestion of "ultimate deformation", "ultimate strain" would be right here — the point being that 'ultimate' refers to the 'rupture' part: it is ultimate when it breaks!
Here, as I understand it, you are just before the breaking point, but presumably after you have passed the 'elastic limit' (i.e. it will be permanently deformed).

This term crops up a lot in mechanics, and there are plenty of references available on the 'Net, starting probably with GDT, so you should be able to find what you want, in order to differentiate between the various terms.

deformation limit state

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limit_state_design
"Limit state design (LSD), also known as load and resistance factor design (LRFD), refers to a design method used in structural engineering. A limit state is a condition of a structure beyond which it no longer fulfills the relevant design criteria.[1] The condition may refer to a degree of loading or other actions on the structure, while the criteria refer to structural integrity, fitness for use, durability or other design requirements. A structure designed by LSD is proportioned to sustain all actions likely to occur during its design life, and to remain fit for use, with an appropriate level of reliability for each limit state. Building codes based on LSD implicitly define the appropriate levels of reliability by their prescriptions."

I understand "équilibre" to mean "state" in this context. Please could you explain why you think that is different. Do you have a better translation?
