German term

nicht etwa als isolierte Oxidkristalle

German to English Science Medical: Dentistry Materials Science
"Grundlage dieses Konzepts ist die in weiten Bereichen gegebene Löslichkeit einiger oxidischer Verbindungen in Zirkonoxid, die zu einer Stabilisierung der tetragonalen Kristallphase führt und hierdurch die kritische t/m-Umwandlung unterdrückt. Dabei werden die Oxide im Kristallgitter des Zirkonoxids eingebaut und liegen nicht etwa als isolierte Oxidkristalle neben den Zirkonoxidkristallen vor."

Dental materials science stuff once more. I don't get the "nicht etwa" phrase in the latter sentence. My current translation of the whole sentence: "In this process, the oxides are incorporated in the crystal lattice of the zirconia and are adjacent to the zirconia crystals, but not as isolated oxide crystals." Something doesn't seem right somehow. TIA for your assistance.

and not (as expected) as separate oxide crystals

As I explained under the previous question, you have a solid solution: the second oxide phase (probably yttria, Y2O3) is "dissolved" in the ZrO2 crystals. It is not present as a separate phase (individual crystals). Ceramics are made up of tiny crystals, each crystal can have a different composition or the same as its neighbour.

agree Protradit : this seems closer to what I see. "Not, for example" as... seems closest to me

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks again Jill. Another well-deserved four points, although I must say the other answers looked pretty good as well. But I like the phrasing and in this field your expertise is hard to beat. Appreciate everyone's help."

and are not ( simply ) adjacent the circonia crystals

in the form of isolated oxide crystals.

is the meaning of this sentence

the *nicht etwa* implies simply that this may be the case but not here as they are incorporated

At the same time the oxides are incorporated (or integrated) in the crystal lattice structure

of the zirconia, and do not really [or "for example,"] exist as individual oxide crystals alongside the zirconia [or zirconium] oxide crystals.
