Spanish term

fondo seroeritroide

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Anatomía patológica (biopsias)
Hola, colegas!

@Claudia I agree, Claudia, medical reports can be very difficult, because they often do make up their own acronyms, abbreviations & general shorthand, I guess to reduce the amount of writing - and time spent writing - required to get across what they need to report. It's probably the same for similar reports in English - difficult to translate to other languages. I often have to spend a lot of time researching, because these idiosyncratic shorthand terms are usually not found in standard dictionaries or even in specialized medical terminology glossaries.

It's from Córdoba, Argentina. And this is not the first time I see an "invented" term... It seems to be part of the medical profession (at least, over here): as long as they understand themselves, no matter the term doesn't exist... I'm joking, of course, but it can be really difficult sometimes to understand what they mean :)

Where from? One other thing, Claudia - where is this text from? Sometimes helpful in puzzling out what is intended, as terminology may sometimes vary regionally, or even locally.
Claudia Porta (asker) Oct 31, 2017:
You may be right, Tom. I should have excluded the term "fondo" in my question. I was finally able to contact my client who told me "sero" makes reference to "blood", while eritroide clearly refers to erythrocytes... Thanks for your comment!
BNN Medical Tr. Oct 31, 2017:
You're likely to be correct, Tom. I'd post it as an answer entry so that the asker can reward you with points later.
Thomas Walker Oct 31, 2017:
Background I think the asker made an unfortunate division of the sentence when formulating the question. I think "de fondo" here is used in its meaning of "background." "Extendidos" are (blood) smears (on microscope slides).
So the trick part of this question is clearly "seroeritroide." I searched high & low for all variants of "serum erythroid," "erythroid serum," etc., & didn't get anywhere. So I have concluded that it is referring to the "erythroid series," a feature of the bone marrow, which is of interest medically & is investigated by pathologists.
So I would say something like "background smears of the erythroid series show...".

red cell background

It is a common expression, sth. like "malignant cells against a red-cell background"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Robert Carter : Not that I don't believe you, but what is a common expression, "fondo seroeritroide"? I found no examples of this word online. Is it a misspelling, and if so, of what?

Sero = soro

"¿Puede ser que "seroeritroide" haga referencia a "serie eritroide" (erythroid series)?"

Creo que no. El prefijo "sero" tiene a ver con el soro sanguíneo (serum). Pero "seroerythroid background" no tiene sentido para mi, y búsquedas de "seroerythroid" o "serum erythroid", con las aspas para obtener resultados exactos, no retornaron resultados. Por eso, no sé como traducir.

Gracias, BNN! Sigo buscando... :)
