Russian term

важное значение

Russian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Good evening,

Please could someone tell me whether this is sometimes used to mean "essential". I would usually assume it means "very important" but in my context it would be more logical for it to mean "essential". I can't provide any more details due to the nature of the job.

I just need to know, is it possible that a translator has used "важное значение" to mean "essential"?

Hoping someone can help!

Thanks.

с Михаилом Помимо “будем мочить по сортирам“, Путин также говорил и “я не врубаюсь“...
Язык явно - “авторитетов“; но не тех, не для форума переводчиков...

Татьяна, что дальше? "Мочить в сортире" тоже считаете образчиком красивой русской речи? Мне жаль Ваших студентов.

You're looking up to the wrong people. Valentina Matvienko as a language authority? Give me a break!
Mikhail Kropotov Oct 19, 2017:
I should add that 'важное значение' comprises an adjective and a noun, whereas 'essential' is a mere adjective. They are not equivalent.
Mikhail Kropotov Oct 19, 2017:
Важное значение is a poor wording. Most typically it results from two similar turns of phrase being mixed up, "иметь (большое) значение" and "играть (важную) роль".

As it stands, your question is too vague to answer unequivocally.
Michael Korovkin Oct 19, 2017:
Can be anything. One needs context In semantics, for example, "an important meaning" may simply mean (a pun's not intended) "важное значение" (of a term, etc.). In other fields it may mean tons of other things. The point is that without any context it hardly means anything at all. Plus, it sounds rather awkward in Russian... I wonder what it's about.

of vital importance is / of fundamental importance is..

I would use vital or fundamental to render this, but it is hard to tell without context, vital could also mean "жизненно важное"depending on the context, so I am suggesting my answer as a reference, more context would tell which word works better here.
of vital importance is / of fundamental importance is..
