This interview is with members of the gypsy population in Brazil, who marry off their children at 13 years of age. This particular sentence relates to a young mother's statement that her baby has been promised to a 2 year-old boy and this is what follows:
Quando crescerem eles se acertam, mas a gente promete assim pra mostrar que gostaria que fosse isso.
I'm not sure what is meant by "se acertam" here and would greatly appreciate suggestions.

As you, I'm not sure if "eles se acertam" in the context means that they would work the issue out for themselves in the future. To be honest, if they were promised for each other, in my understanding, they are supposed to marry and not to break up the commitment. So, they wouldn't have this option available easily, as far as I know.
I think the term is more likely as they would get along with each other. Like they will be used to each other.
Ex. "When they are grown up they'll be used to it (the arrangement)/they'll get along to each other. We arrange this way to make clear for them our wish, though."
