One less exciting way your ears can see is when you feel absolutely sick, so much so, that you feel dirty, as if you were defiled. For example, there was a book that everyone recommended I read. This work contained many explicit sexual scenes rife with premarital sex. Halfway through the book, I felt physically sick and dirty. I realized I don’t have to play around in the mud to know that it is mud. My spiritual ears were telling me this was not good food.

: This seems way off base. It seems most unlikely that a Christian woman would use what would be a very raunchy term for anal sex in her spiritual diary. In any event, such an expression would also not make logical sense coming from a woman.

: Sorry, David, this is completely wrong, IMO. It's a metaphor not a euphemism. How would you then translate "to know that it is mud"? :-)

: I agree with Robert F, but I still think it is a metaphorical expression. Maybe not about sex (or not only). We should find a metaphorical expression to talk about messing with the dirt.
