French term

petit verger

French to English Other Agriculture land use
In a document about land use in a village in the Limousin. context: "Dans le Limousin, le couderc est le plus souvent un enclos attenant à la ferme dans lequel volailles, cochons, moutons et **petit verger** se partagent le même terrain : c’est un espace privatif complanté. Observez l’illustration pour comprendre son organisation." Does this just mean a small orchard area, or is there a more specialised meaning? any help gratefully received!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@ Asker Very happy to see our local word 'couderc' crop up on KudoZ!

From the way it is used in your text, I think it means 'what is grown there' — my guess would be small-sized fruit trees the sort of things you can pick from ground-level; typically, around here, people grow apples, pears, quince, walnuts, and cherries; plus a few peaches; the weather's too cold for apricots.
It might also mean bush fruits — I had a lovely gooseberry bush in mine! But those would of course be incompatible with browsing animals!

small orchard

The phrase wanted was 'petit verger', not 'couderc'. The couderc includes the petit verger.
Example sentence:

...and a small orchard, with apples, shrunk and dried up...et un petit verger aux pommes ratatinées et desséchées...
