German term

Harter Pol dabei ist

German to English Bus/Financial Management
I'm translating a company magazine containing various articles. This one is about quality awareness and making sure that processes are carried out with quality in mind.

This is a Q&A style interview and refers to deficits in what they are calling the QE mindset:

Q Wie stellen wir diese Defizite ab?

A In Workshops arbeiten die Führungsteams die Schwerpunkte im QE Mindset ihres Bereiches heraus.
Harter Pol dabei ist, dass die Schwerpunkte für den eigenen Bereich aus dem eigenen Führungsteam kommen und nicht vorgegeben sind und, dass wir dabei keine neuen Prozesse oder Methoden brauchen, sondern schon bestehendes Wissen und Einstellungen sensibilisieren und festigen.

I want this to mean something along the lines of it being hard wired that the focal points come from your own management team, but I'm not sure if that's the right meaning.

Can anyone confirm or clarify, please? Thanks in advance.

@Joanne "I'm not sure if that's the right meaning"

Here's a definition in German:

"Harte Pole

Trotz aller Flexibilität gibt es unumstößliche Punkte, die erfüllt sein müssen. Diese können etwa Liefertreue oder Reaktionsschnelligkeit auf Anfragen sein."

Why not just say: "It's essential/vital that"?

Danke und einen schönen Sonntag :-) Die deutsche Wendung war mir übrigens bisher überhaupt nicht geläufig.
neutral Lancashireman : Hi Steffen. It seems a shame to settle for a mere adjective here. Can you suggest a noun that comes close to the concept of a 'Pol'?

But why? Replicating a noun-heavy structure doesn't seem to be the best solution here, although I could certainly come up with 'essential prerequisite/requirement' or somesuch ...

The bottom line is...

Embarrassed to suggest this, because it's such a cliché, but maybe that's what the context calls for.
Some amazing Google-Treffer for "harter Pol"...

agree Björn Vrooman : As the "fundamental, most important factor," as Oxford calls it. See disc. I think introductory "it" + vital/essential would suffice.
