Russian term

отoждествил всеобщее с oтдельным случаем

Russian to English Art/Literary Philosophy
Here's the entire sentence: "Гете отoждествил всеобщее с oтдельным случаем, а особенное с миллиoном случаев."
Unfortunately, there's no further context.

My version so far: "Goethe equated the universal with one instance of chance, and the particular with a myriad of chance occurrences."

Discussion

mrrafe Jun 22, 2017:
It might be clearer if you allow yourself some repetition to clarify that it's point and counterpoint. For instance, "the universal with a single random incident, and the singular with a million random incidents." Also I prefer keeping the "million"which is more pointed than "myriad."

That said, I don't know what the author means but, if you do, you can adapt this into something better.

identifies the universal with an individual case and the particular with a million cases

Goethe composed the aphorism around this time:
What is the universal?
The individual case.
What is the particular?
A million cases
