Purpose of Activity:

To practice and reinforce seven different types of locomotor movements in a game-type situation.
Prerequisites:

Introduction to and practice of the locomotion patterns of walking, running, jumping, skipping, galloping, hopping, and sliding. The ability to move safely through general space by moving to the empty spaces and not following others.
Suggested Grade Level:

K-2

Students need to perform different locomotor skills in kindergarten. The locomotor skills include: walking, running, skipping, galloping, hopping, jumping, sliding, walking backwards, and leaping. Students are learning these skills at it could take lots of practice to develop the skills necessary to complete all of the locomotor skills.

Locomotor Skills
A locomotor skill is a physical action that propels an individual from one place to another. This may mean moving forward, backward, or even upwards using certain skills. Examples of locomotor skills include:

Walking or running
Jumping or hopping
Galloping or marching
Skipping
The list starts with skills that are easier to master, and then progresses to the more difficult movements, like skipping.

By mastering the locomotor skill of running with the game of tag, this child can advance to more complicated movements required in games, such as soccer or basketball.
