French term

série américaine (carom billiards)

Non-PRO French to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Billiards / Pool (game)
The context is carom billiards ("billard français").

I found this on Wikipédia under "Billard français" :

"Les limites de la partie libre
Depuis la découverte de la série américaine qui permet de reproduire le même point quasiment à l'infini en gardant les billes le long de la bande, la partie libre a atteint ses limites, les grands Champions de billard étant tous capables de faire 400 points sur mouche. Il a fallu les empêcher de jouer l'américaine ; on a inventé le jeu de cadre."

Thanks for your help!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

rail nurse

"Techniques continued to develop which increased counts greatly despite the crotching prohibition, especially the development of a variety of "nurse" techniques. The most important of these, the rail nurse, involves the progressive nudging of the object balls down a rail, ideally moving them just a few centimeters on each count, keeping them close together and positioned at the end of each stroke in the same or near the same configuration such that the nurse can be replicated again and again."

"There are various nurses, but the most famous of all (and the one that destroyed the game for spectators) is the rail nurse, which is known to the world as the Série Américaine because American players perfected it. "

No problem! The system can be temperamental sometimes. I'm glad it was helpful.

Thanks, Sheila!
agree philgoddard : That's funny - I more or less answered this in the discussion box, but all my entries have disappeared.//I think Dana must have deleted the first two without looking at the discussion.

Thanks, Phil. It's odd all round, because there were three questions on this term (I see the first two have now gone). I thought it would be best to answer the latest. I didn't see your discussion entries.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Charles for you for your answer. As for the triple question, I actually asked it in two different categories, and then had a technical problem which posted it a third time. I believe it was the moderator who took off two of the three. "
