Much has been made of movement assessments recently. Although some form of assessment is necessary to identify where athletes are in the functional spectrum, functional assessments have become overly complicated, offering athletes, coaches, and trainers little in the way of meaningful training information. Some movement evaluation systems have numbers associated with execution quality to provide a numeric score. I have not yet found a movement evaluation that correctly predicts or assesses performance or injury susceptibility. Dr. Stu McGill, one of the world's leading authorities on spinal stability, has studied some of these assessments and found similar results. Additionally, many of these assessments use nonfunctional positions (e.g., overhead squat) and try to extrapolate functional information from these positions. In my opinion, using a test such as an overhead squat to assess the function of the body is equivalent to using a gymnast's iron cross on the rings to assess the function of the shoulder. Although some evaluation techniques within the available systems may be useful for gathering information pertinent to an exercise program, no system that I have looked at thus far has had everything I need. Therefore, I have created my own.
