Italian term

Travi fuori spessore

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Stuctural Engineering
Dear all,

I am stuck with a technical report concerning the construction of a large building.

The term I need to translate into English is "travi fuori spessore".
Context: it is about choosing the right type of strand for a roof slab, so that the thickness of the multi-strand cable does not require the use of "travi fuori spessore".

Thank you in advance for your help!

I just cannot believe there is no such term in English :D
Claudia Cherici Feb 17, 2017:
you don't need a specific term in my opinion; they are just beams whose footprint is outside the "thickness outline" of the surrounding structures
Necramater (asker) Feb 17, 2017:
Exactly Claudia. I've been researching and found lots of different classifications for beams in English but no technical term to fit that specific description. L & T beams come close, but I need a collective term since the T or L shape depends on the location of the beam on the slab.
Claudia Cherici Feb 17, 2017:
fuori spessore yes it's clearer now: it seems to mean that the "fuori spessore" beam would protrude beyond/come out of the outline (the "thickness") of the surrounding structures
Necramater (asker) Feb 17, 2017:
Thanks Marco, you're right. The engineer who wrote the source text explains: "Trave che emerge sul piano inferiore del solaio." I'm not sure whether these beams would actually be "non-standard" or simply larger than that specific slab (I'm not specialized in structural engineering) . The paragraph: "As for the strands placed along the slab, we suggest the use of single-strand elements instead of 22-strand cables, the thickness of which would require travi fuoori spessore."
They also feature in another paragraph: "Vincoli torsionali sono realizzati con le travi fuori spessore a livello intradossale dei solai di cui formano una costolatura."
Marco Solinas Feb 16, 2017:
Source text I think that posting the entire paragraph of the source text would help those who are trying to help you.
On the basis of the available context, one could guess that they are talking about beams of non-standard thickness, but this would be a mere guess.

Non-standard thickness beams

If you use the right thickness cable, you won't have to use lower-thickness beams than the standard (approved) dimension

Near Surface Mounted Reinforcement, NSM or NSMR

I think the term is "Near Surface Mounted Reinforcement, whereby beams are placed near or on the surface of another part of the structure.

prodruding beams

Or: "beams protruding from the slab". Your explanation makes the meaning quite clear.
