I understand that the collapsing of the bellows occurs while the connection is being made, not "before". And proper closure of the connector must be achieved before the bellows reaches its fully closed state (because when fully closed it will prevent further movement of the parts being connected).

Best to re-phrase it in French. For example:
prior to the bellows being collapsed
