The memoirs of an Argentine soccer player, in this case remembering a goal he scored at the World Cup in 1986:
Thanks

reader of the game
I feel slightly parasitical on Charles' answer here, because he has explained it very well and as you can see I agree with him, but I think this is how it is best put in English football language.

Here you'll see the Daily Mirror reckons Michael Carrick is a fine reader of the game, and if you Google the term you'll find a certain Arsenal player and manager near the top of the hits, but as a Tottenham man I couldn't possibly post those links (Carrick did at least once play for Spurs):

Actually it's not the Mirror but Mou himself who pays Carrick that accolade

(He had great) timing / anticipation
It seems to me to be somewhere between these two ideas, or a combination of the two. To be a "tiempista" seems to mean a capacity to be in the right place at the right time. This could be called timing, but I think it necessarily involves anticipation and a capacity to read the play.

"·Caceres is, what we call here, a 'tiempista', because of his excellent timing for tackles and pressing opposition forwards."

: It seems to me that this is more specific, than "reader of the game", but conceptually speaking it comes to be the same...
