désadaptation

French to English Medical Medical (general) Cardiac Arrest Treatment
"Pas de signe d'éveil pendant la réanimation médicalisée ni au décours de celle-ci. Mise en place d'une sédation par Hypnovel et Sufentanil devant une désadaptation à la ventilation mécanique. Transfert en Réanimation Médicale pour la suite de la prise en charge."

From a report about a patient being treated for cardiac arrest. I can't make any sense whatsoever of "désadaptation". All I can find for the word is "mismatch", which is utter nonsense in this context. TIA for any light you can shed on this extremely obscure and strange (for the context) word.

@anne: yes, I agree ! The point is not disconnection physically from the ventilator but lack of synchrony. Also, could translate "devant" as "faced with" in this context.

devant I read "devant" as "before", but is there possibly a way in French to make "devant" read "following" or "owing to" (via the present participle of devoir, for example)? If the context is sedation-désadaptation in both cases, dyssynchrony may well be the point: The patient had to be sedated because his breathing attempts worked against the ventilator rhythm; and when sedation was withdrawn, the patient rapidly showed this dyssynchrony again.

I have just found another instance of this word A good bit further down in the text, "désadaptation" has reared its head again:

"Malgré l'arrêt des sédations, très rapidement, le patient ne présente aucun signe d'éveil adapté mais une désadaptation de la ventilation mécanique avec désaturation concomitante."

So this time it's "désadaptation DE", which perhaps points to the disconnection suggested by Anne. I'm far from sure though and still extremely confused by this word. But maybe this additional sentence will give people some more ideas or confirm their original thinking, as the case may be.

So I'm awarding three points rather than four, because I am still in a state of great uncertainty and doubt over what the word actually means. I'm also not going to enter it in the glossary. But it probably is something of this sort. In all the French translations I've done, this is without doubt once of the most confusing and mystifying words I have ever come across! But many thanks for your help - I do appreciate everyone's efforts, and I would have been far more at sea without this input."

disconnection

The only thing that would make sense to me is désadapter in the sense of disconnect. The patient may have been disconnected from the ventilator for transport to Réanimation Médicale. (Should probably be "désadaptation de" in that case...)

The patient would not "présente" a disconnection from the ventilator, I think. My idea was probably incorrect.
