German term

Ethik des Genug

German to English Other Environment & Ecology Nachhaltigkeitsziele

Vielen Dank!

Discussion

Julia Burgess Jun 28, 2016:
RE "a politics" @ Axel & Stephan - note that you can't have *a* politics in EN. A *policy* of ... is possible, however. I like your "ethical dilemma/question" idea, though, Axel. Again, you can't really have *an* ethics, so that's a good solution.
Axel Dittmer Jun 28, 2016:
Maybe:
..politics of sufficiency and the ethical dilemma/question of “How much is enough“?
Ramey Rieger (X) Jun 27, 2016:
Ethik des Genug Is quite interesting, as it implies that there is already enough, but does not imply downsizing. Hmmm...If we have enough (which we most certainly do) then we need not consume more. The idea of bigger, faster, further, higher is passé and the concept of smaller, slower, closer is moving into view. There are so many of us already practicing 'less is more,' a Buddhist philosophy long adopted by the hippie movement, which glided smoothly into the new age movement, becoming one of the eco movement ABCs and, for millions, has simply become an accepted way of life.
Julia Burgess Jun 27, 2016:
@Conny You might want to look at options like 'simple living' for some ideas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_living#Reducing_consump...
Julia Burgess Jun 27, 2016:
Sufficiency Definitely needs to include "sufficiency" in some form (Stephan might be on the right lines with a combination of the two phrases, or you risk repeating yourself, as the two terms - Suffizienzpolitik & E. des G. - are clearly very close in meaning. If you have "genug", then you have "sufficient", but self-sufficiency wouldn't be right, as the suggestion here is not that you produce everything you need yourself... Tricky!

this may also be interesting: More with less: Scaling sustainable consumption and ... - CDP
Also, sustainable consumption turns up many pdfs. However, I believe you are looking for something in line with the phrase itself.
Example sentence:

especialy in wealthy countryies, there is no getting around sufficency policies and a less is more philosophy

ethics of sufficiency

Wenn man mal bei Google Scholar sucht, findet man einige einschlägige Aufsätze, die den Begriff verwenden.

In diesem Fall dann vielleicht: a politics and ethics of sufficiency
Peer comment(s):

agree monbuckland : Definitely "ethics" rather than "ethic"

Thanks!
neutral philgoddard : But they've already said Suffizienzpolitik.

Yes, that's why I suggested "a politics and ethics of sufficiency."

You can use either the singular or plural (ethic or ethics). US English in particular has no qualms about using the singular here.
Peer comment(s):

agree Carola Lange : As a British native I would favour ethics of restraint, but I take your point about US English preference for the singular

Thanks. Not sure there is an actual preference. Might be worth researching if and when one is preferred over the other.
