Rasen gibt nach

German to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation soccer pitch
this is for the soccer experts:
about the pitch at a training camp in preparation for EURO 2016:

"Der perfekte Fußballrasen ist scherfest und bietet im Zweikampf Halt, gibt aber auch im richtigen Moment nach um Verletzungen zu verhindern."

what would be best for "gibt nach" here?

Thanks!

has just the right give

... to prevent injuries.

I don't disagree with any of the previous suggestions, but I think this may be an improvement that takes account of "im richtigen Moment".

Scratch the "way" of "give way" (see note from Lancashireman, below) & cf. philgoddard's answer.
Example sentence:

The turf is tough enough to withstand a tackle, but yielding enough to prevent injuries.

neutral Lancashireman : Sorry, but football pitches don't 'yield'. 'Give way' is completely wrong, although the ground might 'open up beneath the feet' of a player who has missed a sitter.

I think you're right about "give way" - "give" could be ok, but "give way" does suggest a total collapse, which is obviously not what is meant. Thanks.

cushions

Athletic fields and parks are safer places to play when dense turf is maintained to provide a cushion against injury.
