St. Paul´s Cathedral: El pórtico y el VOLUMEN están dentro de otra de las intensas e importantes conversiones del clasicismo italiano en un arte británico
The term "volumen" appears a couple of times in the Glossary, but without a satisfactory solution.
This terms is constantly used in Spanish architectural texts. There has got to be a good translation. What is the idea?
Or is it one of those terms Spanish authors throw around with out even knowing what they mean? :/

: I'd say 'the portico and the building's architectural volume' to avoid the suggestion that 'its' is referring to the portico alone. See definition that I posted.

As you've seen by the references Charles and I have posted, there's no doubt about what 'volumen' means in this case. However, I haven't been able to find an equivalent term in English, which I find surprising. I've tried 'volumetry', 'volumetric form', etc. but with no luck.
Here are a few ideas:
(Structural) enclosure
Enclosing walls
Enclosed volume
Perimeter
Exterior walls

: Hi Muriel. Architectural volume certainly is an established expression in English, but its meaning seems to be quite different from volumen as an architectural term in Spanish.

: How interesting! It seems to mean exterior form, then. Corroboration here: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espacio_arquitectónico#Volumen... // Helena: you ought to post an answer.

Thanks, Charles! I'm not really sure how to say it in English: exterior walls, perimeter, enclosing walls? Though I've just found a reference to the latter.

Yes, the term was used in relation to teaching blind people to appreciate painting, but I don't think anyone realised at the time that 'volumen' is used to refer to the outside shell of an object.
