Hi Everybody,
I'm translating a small paragraph into English. The text is a short description a movie company.
I have a question about this sentence :
Par le choix des sujets traités, nos augmentons les possibilités de déploiement de nos films.
--With the choice of the topics we deal with, we increase the outreach opportunities of our films.
Is my translation ok? Can I use "outreach" in that context ?
Thanks !

No, you can't use 'outreach' in this way — it refers to the idea of an organization, person, etc. that 'reaches out' — usually, to help people; of course, it has many different meanings and usages according to context, but basically I don't personally feel that a film can do much 'reaching out' — other than if it were, for example, raising people's awareness of some problem, issue, etc. However, I do not believe that 'deploiement' would have been used with that sense in FR.
Without knowing more context — and preferably, what was going through the writer's mind! — it's a little difficult to know exactly what was intended by that particular lexical choice? I suspect it might simply mean 'reach a wider audience' — or perhaps 'address a wider range of audiences'; generally, with films, we talk about 'distribution', either in the literal sense of a business activity, or in the more general sense of 'getting out there to be seen by this or that audience'. On the face of it, this sounds just like marketing 'fluff' — 'we make films about subjects that are likely to interest a lot of people'; but there may be a deeper meaning, implying perhaps that the subjects covered will appeal to (say) broadcasters to show their documentary (or whatever)
It's really pretty impossible to give a definitive answer without clearer indication of what the original intended meaning was.

Good, that does make the intended meaning clearer!
I don't believe we have a single, drop-in term in EN that would be equivalent here; I believe you have 2 solutions:
1) Stick with 'distribution' (massage the word order so the repetitions are not too ugly!) and accept a tiny loss of meaning
or
2) Re-phrase it in the way we have bothe been seeking to do, with the idea of 'rolling out to a wider audience. etc.' — this would be the best solution IMHO, but will require greater application on your behalf, which I'm afraid is rather beyond the scope of the help that it is feasible to give here in the KudoZ terminology forum.

No, you can use 'expansion' in that way — we can't say 'to expand a film'!
As others have also pointed ou,t I suspect it really means not 'get our film seen by more people', but rather 'make out films accessible / available to more dofferent groups of people' — as I say, it's virtually impossible to get any proper meaning out of this without knowing what they had in mind by 'possibilités' and just what it is about the subjects of their films that makes them believe this.

Note from asker:
Many thanks. Actually it's a small paragraph, and the word "distribution" is already used. They describe themselves as a Film and Distribution company. They say that "they are distributing films worldwide". But they also use the word 'déploiement" in another sentence : Nos films sont disponibles en anglais et en français, ce qui multiplie les possibilités de déploiement. I believe they mean that their movies can reach a lot of markets and audiences, etc. So distribution will be good too, but like you said, I think they mean something deeper with "deploiement". What do you think ? |
What do you think then about "expansion" : With the choice of the topics we deal with, we increase the expansion opportunities of our films." Is it more appropriate ? |

: You didn't know that "distribution" had already been used, so you deserve some points. And as for other words, the asker has provided one in their note to you above: "reach".

Thanks Phil! Yes that was in response to my own original alternative suggestion of 'reach'.

: "Reach" as noun would work, I think. "Increase the potential reach of" sounds viable to me. / Maybe, though it can just mean "étendue".

Thanks, Charles! While I agree that 'reach' as a noun could work, I do also feel it is departing too far from the original, which to me has more of a 'push' sense to it (as it would in EN with 'deployment')

broaden/extend the market
I think that you could rearrange this to say that through the choice of topics they broaden the market for their films.
www.animatedfamilyfilms.com/NEWAFF/industry.htmlThe film industry has taken the art of story telling to a completely different plane ... more popular as T.V games; this in turn broadens the market quite significantly.
