Spanish term

raseos de cal

Spanish to English Science Mining & Minerals / Gems Sandstone
From a text about the sandstone used in a cathedral:

Thomas Walker Nov 16, 2015:
More context, please One thing I've learned over the years is that geologic terms (esp. names of rock formations, etc.) are often very localized. What is essentially the same rock unit in Peru, Chile and Argentina, may well have different local names in each of the 3 countries. So, where is this text from? - it might help to zero in on it.
Lucy Williams (asker) Nov 13, 2015:
Like a build up of lime, is that possible?
Lucy Williams (asker) Nov 13, 2015:
Perhaps, maybe that makes it difficult to distinguish the subtypes, if there is lime over it?

Cal is lime. Rasear is to skim, though I don't know if that's the right translation here. Could it mean lime washes?

layers of lime render / lime rendering

It refers to the application of a lime mortar over the surface of the stone (or brick) to provide a smooth surface (raso: level). Historically it was very common. It's the first layer of rendering, basically the same thing as enfoscado. You can whitewash over a lime render, or add a further layer of render which is called revoque (verb: revocar).

"raseo
Método de aplicación del mortero en capas para conseguir la planeidad de la superficie."

So cal really means lime mortar here, but we use "lime" the same way in English.

calcite precipitation

Biogenic carbonate will then dissolve around the growing nucleus, diffuse down the concentration gradient and precipitate on the surface of the growing nucleus or concretion. <<This process will continue until the available biogenic carbonate is consumed or all porosity is filled with calcite cement.>>

neutral Charles Davis : This phenomenon can happen, of course, but (a) cal and calcita are two different things, and (b) why "raseo" if it's this?
