neilmac Oct 21, 2015:
@Dr. JF Serious question, as I often wonder about calques, especially in medical or scientific texts. Would you, as a physician/translator, ever consider rendering "exudado" as "exudate" in English in the context of taking cultures, swabs etc.?
Dr. Jason Faulkner Oct 21, 2015:
A culture of the pharynx is referred to as a "throat culture".
Manuel Alejandro Arciniegas Rivera (asker) Oct 21, 2015:
Köszönöm szépen Erzsébet Akkor inkább "Pharyngeal Culture"
Erzsébet Czopyk Oct 21, 2015:
this is more "medical" Pharyngeal Culture

agree Anne Schulz : both would work, IMO: cervix culture or cervical culture (also: endocervix/endocervical culture) -- a test for sexually transmitted infections

cervical culture

This is a bacteriology test in which the sample is plated on agar for bacterial growth. Not to be confused with a smear which is a histology test done on a microscope slide that is used to detect abnormal cells.

agree neilmac : As stated in my note added earlier. BTW, I'd like to ask you something in the Discussion section :)

neutral Erzsébet Czopyk : I added a note at 3 mins which clearly gives this explanation. The Pap came into my mind first, because I am a cancer survivor. But the tranlation suggestion I entered was fully correct.

Cervical screening test

Women are routinely invited to have cervical screening tests (also called smear tests).
"A cervical screening test (previously known as a smear test) is a method of detecting abnormal cells on the cervix. The cervix is the entrance to the womb from the vagina. Detecting and removing abnormal cervical cells can prevent cervical cancer."

However, if you are going to call all of these tests "culture", then cervical culture is the way to go:

Peer comment(s):

disagree Dr. Jason Faulkner : A cervical screening test (commonly Pap smear) is a histology test for cancer. This question is referring to a culture.
