set up a dunk

English to French Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Basketball
March 28, 1995: In his first game back from his first retirement, and wearing his baseball number 45, Jordan showed that he still had his old touch, going for 55 points on 21 of 37 shooting. But this game would be won on a pass and not a shot. Jordan’s second assist of the game set up a dunk in the closing seconds that provided the Chicago Bulls with the winning margin in a 113-111 victory.

WIKIPEDIA

neutral writeaway : it's about setting up a dunk, not about making one

a permis de marquer/un dunk

I am no expert on basketball, but the ST clearly states that Jordan gave an "assist" (une passe décisive), which 'set up' (mettre en place, permettre) a dunk. In other words he made it possible for a team-mate to score.

Writeaway is right when he says a native French speaker would perhaps come up with another term.
I have found "préparation" Préparation du tir=setting up of the throw
Here: http://www.sportquick.com/articles/basketball-000007/lexique...
In that case it would be "préparer un dunk" but I eagerly await confirmation!
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : this is certainly the idea/meaning but perhaps a (native) French speaker who knows basketball terminology might come up with another way to express it.

I agree: I found "passe décisive" for "assist", but have so far come up with nothing convincing as a specific term for set up... Thanks writeaway :-)
