What is surge?

Pressure transients are changes in fluid motion that give rise to pressure fluctuations in pipelines known as pressure surge or water hammer. If severe, pressure surge can lead to operational problems and catastrophic failure by producing pressures which far exceed the steady state pipeline pressure envelope and/or maximum allowable operating pressures.

Up-surges may burst pipelines or pumps and down-surges may cause thin-walled pipelines to collapse if appropriate surge alleviation devices are not installed. Less extreme problems may be thrust blocks moving or air and pollutants being sucked into water mains. The introduction of air can result in air locking, unstable flow or the formation of hydraulic jumps within the pipeline.

Consideration of transient pressures in conjunction with its system operation is therefore a key element in the design of any pipeline as this ensures that it can be operated in a safe and reliable manner.
