Colegio Odontológico

Spanish to English Other Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs Education
I'm translating a diploma issued in Colombia where the name of the university is called
"Colegio Odontológico". How should I translate this?
I thought of "School of Dentistry", but I'm not sure this is the best option here.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions and ideas.

CONCLUSION Como lo mencionó Henry, en este caso no se trataba de la universidad ni de la facultad, sino de la "Colombian Dental Association". De todas maneras, les agradezco mucho a todos por sus comentarios y sus links. Veo que algunos han utilizado "odontology". ¿No es "dentistry"? Hace muchos años una reina colombiana fue a un Miss Universo y al preguntarle a qué se dedicaba dijo que estudiaba "odontology", pero nadie le entendió.

Hitch The problem is, "odontology" is normally not used in the names of schools/departments/divisions in English-speaking countries.

It is best in this case to post the correct translation College of Odontology, to me sounds the most accurate, particularly because it is a certificate should be translated almost to the letter

If the school is part of a larger university system, both "school" and "college" are OK. If it is a stand-alone institution, I'd go for "college", which clearly implies a tertiary institution. Obviously, many institutions of higher learning have the word "school" in their names, e.g. THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS or THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS, but with "college" you simply cannot go wrong. If it is a little-known institution, things might get muddy for the person evaluating your documents (unless it can be inferred from the document what type of school the institution is). For years, I have been dealing with evaluating agencies and university admission committees, which, at times, lower applicants' credentials because of vague translations. This often happens with "schools" and "academies".

DUDA Un "colegio" en muchos países es una escuela primaria para niños jovencitos, o tratándose de un colegio profesional es una "asociación", o sea "Dental Association" en el CONTEXTO. ¿En Colombia se entiende otra cosa? Porque dices que se trata de una universidad y eso me extraña.

Again, in no way do I claim that "school" is wrong. However, in this case, based on my dealings with evaluation agencies, at least in the U.S., "college" is my preference.

As I said in my references, I see nothing wrong with the use of "School". IMO, the use/meaning of "School" in countries other than Colombia is irrelevant.

I am not sure why the ambivalence to use "School" of Dentistry. IMO, this is fairly common usage and the use of "school" in this context does not mean an association, or a high school. In my country for instance, there is both a School of Dentistry and an Association consisting of accredited members of the dental profession.
