German term

Kindi

Non-PRO German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hi everyone! Can someone help me with the term Kindi? Here are 2 sentences using the word:

1) Jetzt ist mein Großer im Kindi und die Kleine ist tatsächlich im Büro mit dabei.

2) Und wenn dann mal was ist (Krankheit, Geburtstag, später Veranstaltung Kindi/Schule usw.), dann habe ich keine Schwierigkeiten mir Zeit dafür zu nehmen.

I at first thought when I translated the first sentence that it was Kindergarten, but based on the second sentence, I am now not sure. Do you think it is instead referring to daycare?

Please share your thoughts!!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): EK Yokohama

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

agree Thomas Pfann : Yes, 'Kindi' is short for 'Kindergarten' - prime example of German Aküfi (Abkürzungsfimmel) ;-)

preschool, nursery school

The German "Kindergarten" corresponds most closely with the US English "preschool." (US English "kindergarten," paradoxically, corresponds most closely with German "Vorschule," although Vorschule in this sense seems to be a thing of the past in most of Germany, where there is no grade K and elementary school starts with grade 1.) This also explains why you're confused. :)
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : Why is "equivalence" with US English needed here? The term is from a German text and presumably refers to a child in Germany

I was assuming that the asker's background is US English and that this is why she was confused (US kindergarten and German Kindergarten not being the exact same thing).
agree EK Yokohama : German term: "Kindi = Kindergarten", English term: "preschool", "nursery (school)", NOT "kindergarten"
