Langosta / Bogavante

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary shellfish
When both appear on a menu, how to differentiate?

MARISCOS Y FRUTOS DEL MAR
Cangrejo real 147 € / kg
Bogavante canadiense 42 € / unidad
Bogavante mediterráneo 200 € / kg
Langosta mediterránea 227 € / kg
Cigalas 52 € / kg


Would bogavante be clawed lobster and langosta simply lobster?

Wikipedia describes a spiny lobster as: "Spiny lobsters can be easily distinguished from true lobsters by their very long, thick, spiny antennae, by the lack of chelae (claws) on the first four pairs of walking legs, although the females of most species have a small claw on the fifth pair..." So just lobster and spiny lobster should suffice.

Maybe use the original name in Spanish... ...and add a small explanation for the type of lobster in brackets.

Neil makes a good point and unless you order a whole lobster, it's often only the tail you get served so it doesn't really matter which kind of lobster it is. But as the list specifies two different kinds, there is a need to differentiate here. Perhaps you could just say 'Spiny lobster' and 'Lobster'.

Not sure I agree I think they sound great on a menu. After all, lobsters or whatever you want to call them are a little freaky looking. I would rather order the correct one based on a description rather than deciphering a creative moniker.

Commenting here to avoid disagree/neutral While biologically correct, I don't think "spiny" and claw" are desirable vocabulary for a menu (except maybe at Hallowe'en or in a horror-theme park). I'd tend to call both bogavante/langosta "lobster" and maybe try to find or invent a creative monicker for the "Langosta mediterránea"...

I would normally have suggested just lobster for bogavante and langouste for langosta, but a problem in this particular list is that bogavante mediterráneo would come out as Mediterranean lobster, and that term is very commonly used in North America for the langosta, so it would create confusion. Crawfish for langosta, in my opinion, would be misunderstood, particularly by a British audience.

"Clawed lobster" and "spiny lobster" Couple of discussion threads on Wordreference which you have probably seen. Above seems to be the choice on both. Same problem translating from French.

Crayfish (crawfish) / Lobster

From what I've seen in menus (Google search) they tend to call the Bogavante (I searched the Portuguese term Lavagante) Lobster, while the Langosta is a bit smaller.

You have a real headache here because you have to provide names for three different dinners!
Maybe European lobster, American lobster and spiny lobster (which is not directly related to the lobster, but takes its name!) and this is all complicated by information such as:
