French to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Any Stendhal experts out there?

I have a short quote from Stendhal in an article on a French artist, and I would like to use the official English for this if it exists, but I can't seem to find it, and there is SO much stuff on Stendhal to wade through. I find lots of references to it in French, however. Apparently, it is the title of chapter XCI of "Histoire de la peinture en Italie".

This is the sentence from the text:

Le recours au réel comme à un répertoire lui impose de « réfléchir l’habitude », selon l’impératif stendhalien, pour en déjouer les automatismes.

The rule I tend to follow is that if an 'accepted' translation is too hard to find, i.e. begins to take up too much time, then I use my own translation (and if it's so hard to find, it won't necessarily be particularly well known).

Thanks Carol, digging around a bit more, I think that you are right in that this is not from one of his well-known works. I was worried it would be a concept immediately known to Stendhal buffs, but now I think I can safely translate it myself as philgoddard suggests.

@FF, do you have access to JSTOR? without this, there seems to be very little in English about Stendhal's writings on Italian painting. He apparently wrote a collection of essays on the subject, but I can't even find the title in English, let alone access it :(

Of course, I understand that, but if a translation exists that English readers of Stendhal would be most familiar with, then I would prefer to use that one

There's no such thing as an official translation of a book. You can translate it however you like, within reason.
