Quando sono stata invitata a parlare della mia esperienza di donna in questa sede, ho provato una sensazione di timore. La parola "donna" per me è un po’ tabu, principalmente per due motivi:
1: l'uso della parola "donna" anziché "ragazza", che mi mette definitivamente davanti al fatto che sto crescendo anche io!
2: dover ripercorrere la mia storia lavorativa usando come filo conduttore il mio genere femminile mi ha fatto riflettere su quanti anni (della mia adolescenza prima e dell'età adulta poi) io abbia passato, volutamente o meno, a sabotare il mio rapporto con le donne.
Tendenzialmente mi sono sempre relazionata più facilmente con uomini, fare sport generalmente più amati da un pubblico maschile, come la kick boxing, passare i pomeriggi a studiare in facoltà meno popolate da donne (studiavo legge ma preferivo la biblioteca di ingegneria).

I don't see why a literal translation does not work in this context. Seems we are talking about consciously or unconsiously damaging the speaker's relationship with women. And I would put relationship in singular because we are talking about women generically and not specific relationships, but both options could work.

: I like literal translations, but I think in this case it makes the phrase sound a bit clumsy - i.e. in my experience we do not normally use the verb "to sabotage" when talking about our actions towards ourself.

Thanks for the comment. In my understanding, it's the relationship that is sabotaged, and I like the original word because there is an element of deliberate destruction (volutamente). But of course there are lots of other ways of rendering this idea.

In my experience "self-destructive" is a term widely used in terms of our behaviour in relationships (of all sorts). "sabotage" used literally is not used so much, usage being important for translation, particularly when translating a common idea such as this.

But this is the generally used term for this phrase in UK English. How often do you hear "to sabotage ones own relationships"./// Yes, it is used but I was talking about the more commonly used phrasing.

'Rapport' fits better here as this implies relationships (with women) in general, rather than a particular relationship. Otherwise it would have to be 'relationships'.
