"Don’t give people important-sounding job descriptions immediately; keep them sounding equal and leave room to adopt grander titles later when people have proved themselves."

: Yes, 'neutre' does the trick nicely. 'Equal' isn't great in English in this sentence, although we all understand what they mean. 'Neutral job titles' would have been better in English too.

égalitaire
It isn't the person who would sound 'equal', but the 'job descriptions' (which seems to me to be what 'them' refers back to), hence maybe 'égalitaire' — all people have job decriptions that make them sound as if they are on the same level.
