French term

s'emparent

French to English Art/Literary Philosophy
Philosophy text.

"Les genealogies courtes, fascinees par la technologie, ont tendance a faire des nouvelles technologies une sphere separee des autres dynamiques sociales et expressives. Or les technologies ne valent que par les forces qui s'en emparent."

I have: "Wherein, the technologies' worth depends completely on the forces that appropriate them." Maybe "take them up" would be better? Or something else?

"Wherein" sounds odd. I'd leave it out.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 13, 2014:
Error in original "FascinENT" for the plural of the verb, not "fascineS".

take hold of/exploit them

If you want an alternative to "appropriate", but I think that is fine as well.

"But the worth of a technology comes solely from the forces that take hold of them.

I'm not sure where the "Wherein" comes from?

Yes, lots of possibilities here
agree B D Finch : Prefer "exploit" or Helen's suggestion. However, I think that the Asker's suggestion of "appropriate" is fine too.

Yes, there are many possible choices
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Or turning the word order around to make use of the passive voice. Also, I think using "value" rather than "worth" might produce a more natural final result.

Yes, I agree "value" could work better than "worth"
