Swedish term

tänja v sträcka

Swedish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Hello
I'm looking for the difference between these two words in the context of sport/ fitness.
They are SEPARATE headings in a chart describing body movements so the author clearly sees a qualitative difference.

Many thanks
Duncan

Judging from my references "tänja" is the opposite of
"active stretching". "Tänja" has a bouncing or rocking action and "active stretching" is often used in Yoga, where a stretch is held for a longer time (than in "tänja").
Duncan Foster (asker) Jul 18, 2014:
Thanks all - it just doesn't work to have longer expressions live active stretching, etc ...would stick out a mile from all the other entries like twist and swing. So context means Ive gone with stretch and extend, though the other translations may be better in some ways.
Yvonne Tapper-Gardzina Jul 18, 2014:
Could you perhaps say that "tänja' is an 'active movement' or 'active stretching' and 'sträcka' is 'stretching'?
Duncan Foster (asker) Jul 18, 2014:
Hi Katarina. Its an analysis of the different movement players use during sport and fitness activities So fore example in tennis there is arm swinging, bending, twisting running etc. .. tänja ard sträcka are two distinct movements in this list.
Katarina Kvarnhult Jul 18, 2014:
Hello Duncan, would you able to tell the specific phrase where "sträcka" is being used? I was thinking of the English term "reach out" but would need more context. Very often the terms -- töja, tänja, sträcka and "stretcha" -- are used synonymously.
Duncan Foster (asker) Jul 18, 2014:
Thanks svenskamerikan. That's very helpful. However, in my text the movements seem to be during a game or activity, one of the movements that are inviolved, like bending, rotating etc. rather than before or after

stretch and extend

"Extend" (sträcka) as the opposite of "Flex" (böja)
"Stretch" (tänja) like the severe passive or active movement of for example a limb to achieve a long muscle.

dynamic stretching vs. static stretching

Dynamic stretching is done after a proper warm-up to prepare for a run for example, and static stretching is done after the run to increase flexibility and to cool down the body.

ballistic stretching vs active stretching

Ballistic stretching is stretching by bouncing into (or out of) a stretched position.
Active stretching is stretching the muscle as far as you can and holding the position for 20-30 seconds.
