dynamique de repli

French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) alternative finance system
Hello,

I'm working on a translation about a European investment cooperative which has been created to finance social and ecological projects. Here is the context (XXX is the name of the investment cooperative);

« XXX prend son sens dans le débat entre le local et l’européen : il ne faut pas que le local soit une dynamique de repli mais une dynamique de collaboration proche pour des enjeux communs qui nous dépassent. »

This is my attempt;

“XXX finds its expression in the discussion on local and European matters; local issues should not be dealt with in a spirit of isolationism but in a spirit of close collaboration on matters of common interest which are beyond our scope.”

I'd be happy to hear any other ideas on how "dynamique de repli" could be translated in this particular context.

Local issues I don't think that you should translate "des enjeux communs" by "local issues of common interest". Unless there's something else in the document that suggests it's limited to local interests of course. I think your first phrase is better.

With all due respect to Daryo I'm not sure that the metaphor of the shell is appropriate with the use of "dynamic de repli" which is ...dynamic ...maybe retreating behind their ramparts would be closer

@Phil Thanks for your suggested translation Phil. I should have mentioned that this is marketing material for this alternative credit organisation. Here is my latest version which incorporates some of your ideas and some new ones of my own; "XXX comes into its own in the European versus local debate. Rather than adopting an isolationist standpoint, local issues of common interest that are beyond our scope should be tackled on a collaborative basis."
Ruth C (X) Jul 9, 2014:
Agree that Phil's translation is good.
polyglot45 Jul 9, 2014:
in a vacuum local issues should not be addressed
John Marston Jul 9, 2014:
I like Phil's suggestion (although it's missing the FR "le local"). Could you also say "protectionist" in place of "isolationist"?
philgoddard Jul 9, 2014:
I agree that the meaning is isolationism, but I think "finds its expression in" sounds awkward, and you shouldn't repeat "spirit" in the same way that the French repeats "dynamique".
How about: "XX should be engaged in the debate at both local and European levels. Rather than being isolationist, we should work closely with others on local issues of common interest that are beyond the scope of a single organisation."

(be seen as a) backlash

I think your piece is fine, with a little alteration :
"XXX finds its expression in the discussion on local and European matters; local issues should not be seen as a backlash, but rather in a spirit of close collaboration on matters of common interest which are beyond our scope.”

That's what I think it means; not about isolationism as such;
Peer comment(s):

disagree philgoddard : It doesn't mean backlash, and that makes no sense in the context.

And yet that is precidely,what it means in the context;

to retreat into your own shell

« XXX prend son sens dans le débat entre le local et l’européen : il ne faut pas que le local soit une dynamique de repli mais une dynamique de collaboration proche pour des enjeux communs qui nous dépassent. »

“XXX finds its raison d'être in the interaction between the local and European level; the approach to local issues should not be to retreat into your own shell but to engage on a wider scale in cooperation on ..."
