BTW: I've often seen zweite Bildungsweg described as "second chance education".
Could also be "found himself sidelined into photography" or
"got into photography by the back door/almost purely by chance."

A significant number of graduates featured in this book started off with a job unrelated to what they studied in college, let alone one they had an interest in. Others were doing exactly what they planned for while they were in college, while some were taking a circuitous path as they navigated their post-college lives; the chapters in this book reflect such a variety of paths.

I did stay in the academic business, taking a circuitous path which included both being blackballed and being treated with great kindness and am now a tenured professor at the engineering school of New York University.
