Damasio, a leading researcher into human consciousness, describes
our ‘sense of self ’ as an awareness emerging as a result of embodied

processes, not just of mind. It is the product of our body’s monitoring,
and being affected by, the fluctuating composition of the blood and
other body chemistry. Combined with proprioceptive feedback from
muscles and organs, this gives us a preverbal sense of feeling that we
know what is happening and knowing that we know. Consciousness,
and a sense of presence to ourselves and the world around us, comes
from being in the process of this flow of sensations and feedback. We
become aware of our feelings and ‘sense of self ’, in the first instance, by
noticing how this ongoing play of sensations and feelings is changed as
we move through different encounters with places, people and things.
It is precisely through the interplay of all these capacities that writing
traditionally worked. It HAD scent, texture, sheen, scale, colour, architecture,
weight, shape and duration, IN FULL MEASURE.
