German term

Siebglocke

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Early 20th-century gasworks
This is from the description of the tar extractor in an early municipal gasworks:
"Im Teerabscheider wurden die staubartigen Teerpartikel gegen eine dreifache Siebglocke geschleudert, sodass die Teepartikel durch die Öffnungen in die Teergrube abgeleitet wurden."

I wouldn't be too concerned about a direct translation of the "Glocke" component

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I can't really do anything other than award points on a totally arbitrary basis. The thing was obviously a bell-shaped sieve or filter - my purpose in asking the question was to make sure I wasn't missing some standard and widely used term for it in English. It would seem from the spread of suggestions that I am not, and all the answers were plausible, so thanks to everyone."

OK, this is not quite as satisfying as the German, and that "Glocke" part may mean it is just bell-shaped, but this link has some pictures and these things seem to be cylindrical.
Go down to Fig. 745 and 746.

Have fun -- I know *I* did :)

Abbildung 1)

(same again)

Found no reference in the internet with „Siebglocke“ and its translation, but the description says that the sieve (strainer) is covered by a bell-shaped socket or cup.

On all these siphons design, a strainer pipe should be installed around the bell, this is to prevent gravel entering the bell.

It resembles the a.m. shown “Siebglocke”.

The valve bonnet for the head valve is part of a short bell-shaped casting that is secured to the induction piping and contains the valve seat. A drain connection leads inboard from a point directly below this valve.
The valve bonnet for the hull valve is part of a casting to which the inboard duct is secured.

neutral philgoddard : This is really confusing, and some of the translations are awful. "Bell-shaped strainer" is a possibility, but I don't see where you get " shell, bonnet, socket or cup" from.

So, you agree to "Bell-shaped strainer", my first idea? The other terms were added for illustatration.
neutral Lancashireman : Yes, Phil agrees it is 'Bell-shaped strainer'. Why would you need to ask for confirmation?
