German term

Größe

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software
The sentence is:
"Der Wert der Variable wird einer **Größe** zugewiesen."

Normally I translate this with 'variable', sometimes 'value' - The conflict here is obvious.

The next sentence is "Browser für Größen"
There is also a 'Größenbrowser"

The translations deals with software for testing in an automotive environment.
Proposed translations (English)
3 magnitude

Discussion

Richard Stephen (asker) Apr 9, 2014:
Thanx to everyone who participated with their ideas, thoughts, etc. As mentioned previously the term 'Normname' has been used throughout this client's translations in the past, so I think it best to stick with this, even through I'm not sure it is 'correct' in a broader sense.
Richard Stephen (asker) Apr 7, 2014:
After progressing further with this translation I have found that the term 'Normname' has been used frequently in the past in this context. Although I am not sure that this is correct, at least the client has accepted it in the past.
jccantrell Apr 4, 2014:
Einheit I think they would have used that word in German for units. Of course, if the German is poor, anything is possible....
Richard Stephen (asker) Apr 4, 2014:
Does anyone think we may be talking about units of measure, such as assigning 'mm' to a dimension, etc.?
jccantrell Apr 4, 2014:
with opolt Assuming that they are not really filling in the space with a number, you might consider parameter. In this way, the "value" of the variable is really a pointer to perhaps an entry in a table that contains the REAL number.

If you can find where this variable is defined and know what its units are, you would be closer to finding out what the author wanted to say.
Jonathan MacKerron Apr 4, 2014:
It seems as if these Größe are selected when entering the variable, presumably from a drop-down menu containing the various possible designations on offer?
"zugewiesen" = "assigned"
opolt Apr 4, 2014:
Ich denke ... ... "parameter" wäre vielleicht eine Möglichkeit. Im IT-Bereich wird der Begriff oft in recht unspezifischer Weise verwendet.
Jonathan MacKerron Apr 4, 2014:
dimension/size/magnitude/quantity? Don't really understand your context - do the cited browsers serve as interfaces for the testing software??
Perhaps it just means that the variable needs to be defined in whatever quantitative terms are on offer.

I believe that it is the correct term (that together with an engineering unit create a '\dimension\')
