French term

Chef

French to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Hello everyone

I'm having a problem with this word in the context of fabric testing, it's talking about measuring the length of sample pieces of fabric and it's in this sentence:

La mesure de la largueur est effectuée en trois mésures au minimum:

- la première à plus d'un mètre du chef
- la dernière à plus d'un mètre du liteau de queue

I'm guessing "chef" refers to a part of the sample such as the edge or the top or something but I'm not really sure which part, any ideas would be very welcome!

Lorraine Dubuc Jan 20, 2014:
@Emma, la mesure de la largeur est probablement effectuée pour en vérifier la constance, l'exactitude sur l'ensemble de la pièce. Donc voir au début et à la fin de la pièce pour voir si la largeur est constante.

Mistake Oops just read it again and it's the width not the length that is being measured...

beginning

chef de pièce » (c'est-à-dire la bande qui marquerait le début du tissu),

The beginning edge of a manufactured piece of fabric as opposed to the final edge (liteau de queue).
Example sentence:

which means the part indicating the beginning of a fabric

agree patrickfor : can't say if there is a specific name for it in english, but yest it's the beginning . TEXTILE. Chef d'une étoffe. Extrémité par laquelle on a commencé la fabrication d'une pièce d'étoffe.

Merci! J'ai bien cherché pour trouver l'équivalent. Il doit bien en exister un.
