Caro colega, "spirit" para o seu autor é a abreviatura de "petroleum spirits" ou seja os solventes não polares usados pelos pintores que aqui no Brasil chamamos de "thinner" (porque "afina " a tinta) ou essência de terebentina.

Peço desculpas ao colega. queira ignorar minha resposta. neste caso especifico, o autor usa "spirit" se referindo, como diz o colega Nick, a alcool etílico. A glicerina, sendo um tri-alcool é uma molécula altamente polar (chega a ser higroscópica) e portanto é insolúvel em solventes não polares como o thinner. Desculpem a burrada.
