Spesso il disturbo si presenta in soggetti esposti per anni a rumori troppo forti, in molti casi in concomitanza con presbiacusia. Una forte caduta sulle frequenze acute presenta problemi particolari per una protesizzazione con apparecchi acustici, richiede caratteristiche di amplificazione diverse rispetto a una "normale" ipoacusia neurosensoriale.
