Medical (general)
Academic degrees
This is a photograph caption which is part of the biography of a distinguished medical doctor. One of the captions is for a photograph (which I do not have) of a thesis written by this doctor.
This is the WHOLE phrase (sorry, no other context):
*****Documento 14: «NOMBRE DE LA TESIS», Tesis de agregatura de XXX, 1845.*****
There is already a doctoral thesis by this person, three years prior to this one. Could the word refer to a post-doctoral thesis? I have never heard of this, nor does it appear in the RAE dictionary.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
NB: I may not be able to respond to all answers any time soon. They will be acknowledged in the New Year. Happy Holidays to all!

agrégé thesis
The word "agrégé" is listed in Merriam-Webster's unabridged English dictionary, which means, according to most style manuals, that you can use it in English text. Here's the definition:
"an academic rank conferred by a French university on one who has passed a rigidly competitive examination and who is therefore entitled to appointment to the highest teaching post in a lyc*e or in one of the faculties of a university"
You can use it without accents, but I think the accents help to identify the meaning.
Examples:

Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie, Joy Dorothy Harvey - 2000 - Women scientists
She served as an assistant in microbiology until she finished her **agrege thesis**, entitling her to lecture in the university in natural sciences. At that point, she was ...

Charles Davis
: Agrégation is also in M-W unabridged, so "agrégation thesis" could also be used. I think either would be acceptable.

Yes, I didn't look for "agrégation" - which is actually more common.

: The form "aggregation thesis" is used here: "Ordenstein published the first monograph on MS as an aggregation thesis in 1867..."

post-doctoral thesis
Your own suggestion seems the most logical. If the person already has a doctorate, this thesis would logically be "post-".

"Agregaturas"
May refer to the Uruguayan education system:

Maybe these "agregaturas" need an additional thesis to demonstrate their superior qualification?

Note from asker:
Thank you very much, Anne, for this info. Unfortunately, I don't think we're talking about the same thing. This person did his "agregatura thesis" on a medical specialization in France. The author of the book where the photo and caption are inserted is Cuban. Thank you again! |
