Discussion

David Lin Nov 23, 2013:
通常做儿女的当回答别人关于自己父母的问题, 很少会从父母的身份或角度来表达。 一般都会说: "老人家都是这样子。。。" 而很少或不会说"做父母都是这个样子"。所以个人觉得回答人是想表达人老了都一样, 和歌词里面的表达雷同。供参考。
Sharon Toh, MITI MCIL Nov 23, 2013:
My 2 cents In the given lyrics example, to me, it means: 当(我们)老(了)的那(一)天,依然可以数星星

Not quite similar with the context here. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
David Lin Nov 23, 2013:
歌词都有这样对年老的表达 参看赵婉彤的歌词:

春夏秋冬一年四季都愿意

当老的那天依然可以数星星

看风景
听下雨的声音
幸福在回忆里慢慢沉溺

parents are all basically like that

1: What's wrong with your father?
2: Parents are all basically like that, just that he's a tad extreme.

当老: more or less means 当父母, i.e. 当父母的心都一样

For example, "两老" refers to 父母. Here, "老" also refers to 父母.

Just to elaborate a little further:

当老的心都一样 -> /当老(父母)的/心都一样

当父母的 = 为人父母的 (literally: as parents)

=> 为人父母的,心都一样,只是(他)有点极端(罢)了。

This is my reading. FYI.

the views (focus, concerns, opinions) of the elderly parents

the views (focus, concerns, opinions) of the elderly parents are all the same and tend to be somewhat extreme, however.

more context needed.

people (or all minds) at old age

I have an alternative view on "当老的心."
"当" may mean "at the time/age."
The phrase may refer to the psychology at old age.
Peer comment(s):

agree David Lin : I think here's more reference to the effect of age than to the identity as a parent given the flow of the conversation.

You know what parents are like

To make it work in the context of the conversation:
What's up with your dad?
You know what parents are like. He's just a bit more extreme
Peer comment(s):

agree Danny Wu : "You know what parents are like at such an age" may be better.
