German term

Unterfahrstützen

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Construction methods to improve sustainability and save energy
Not a lot of context for the specific term, unfortunately. The following text appears in a document on valuing properties in the logistics industry:

Nachhaltigkeits- bzw. Energieeinspareffekte lassen sich unter anderem durch folgende Maßnahmen erzielen:
[...]
- wärmegedämmte Laderampen mit Spaltabdichtungen und *Unterfahrstützen*

Any assistance with an appropriate English term for "Unterfahrstützen" would be much appreciated.

Yorkshireman Nov 1, 2013:
A flash of inspiration? Pretty much a stab in the dark, but could the author have been thinking of retractable legs/supports that fold away under the dock - this would prevent heat loss to the ground.
Martin Purdy (asker) Oct 31, 2013:
Not sure that fits in the present context though - aren't we talking about the loading docks rather than the HGVs?
Yorkshireman Oct 31, 2013:
Underride protection? Not much - it's that bar construction on the back end of HGVs that stops Porsche drivers slicing the roof (and their heads) off.

We are indeed, that's why I wrote that it wouldn't add much to what we know.
Martin Purdy (asker) Oct 31, 2013:
Well, the client's response, received today, is that it means "Unterfahrschutz". Not sure how much that adds to what we knew already. Given that the mystery item is intended to ensure the long life/sustainability of the system and cut down on energy waste, and that we have an insulating element mentioned already, I wonder whether a bland paraphrase along the lines of "dock supports" would suffice.
freekfluweel Oct 21, 2013:
@BR I know what "Unterfahren einer Laderampe" is. The Spaltab. make perfect sense in light of energy saving, however, how can Unterfahrstützen be beneficial. Most likely "Schürze" would be more accurate. The term doesn't appear anywhere else but at Hörmann's...
Bernd Runge Oct 21, 2013:
If you want to see what the 'Unterfahren einer Laderampe' is, take a look at figure 71 on page 59/61 on http://publikationen.dguv.de/dguv/pdf/10002/bgi5042.pdf . Not sure how a Stütze of some kind fits into this context. Maybe they meant a Schürze ... The Spaltabdichtung is visible at the right side of the truck.
I'd definitely ask the client.
freekfluweel Oct 21, 2013:
new term by Hörmann Yorkshireman already stated it's some kind of dock leveller, but Hörmann uses other words for that. However I have the feeling it's not exactly that but possibly more like a part of a docking system: Laderampen MIT Spaltab. UND Unterfahrstützen. So it might well be a "physical stud" (p2, look at dock 28)

Ask client for picture of "Unterfahrstützen" or take the safe option: forklift access

dock leveller

This seems to be about a loading docks/loading bays at a logistics centre - I very much suspect that the Unterfahrstützen is a dock leveller. This is a construction that is heavy enough to allow forklifts to unload trucks backed up to the loading dock (bay).

In this case, Laderampe would be a loading bay or a loading dock rather than a loading ramp. i.e. "Insulated and sealed loading docks with dock levellers are installed for the minimisation of energy losses."

BTW: Unterfahren is mentioned here as allowing forklift access:
