Italian term

Anal. chim. strum. mediante distr. tra fasi

Italian to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Dear all,

I am translating an Italian undergraduate academic transcript.
The study program is related to chemistry.
One of the course names is as follows:
========
Anal. chim. strum. mediante distr. tra fasi.
========
Could you please advise me on how to best translate this course name into US English?
I suppose the first three words can be translated as "instrumental analytical chemistry",
but what about the rest?

Thank you in advance,
Igor.

chemical analysis using equipment and by means of distribution among phases

"Strumentale" can mean "by using equipment" or else "in order to attain an ulterior purpose". All chem analysis is done with equipment AND in order to attain a goal, so it seems rather pointless. I am just guessing thet "distr." means "distribution". I am also assuming that there are 3 or more phases. If there are only 2, use "between" instead of "among"

The only 2 posible meanings of "distr." seem to be "distribuzione" and "distrazione". The only conceivable meaning of ."distrazione" in this context would be "diversion" or "removal", but that does not seem to make any sense.
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot! There is an entry on "instrumental chemistry" in Wikipedia, though... (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrumental_chemistry)

Instrumental Methods of Analysis: Phase distribution techniques

This sounds like it refers to phase distribution chromatography but it may include other techniques too. I think most chemists refer to their fancy tools as instruments and reserve the word equipment for the beakers and hotplates. You can stick in the word chemical too if you like - but to save space, it still looks like a chemistry class.

Instrumental analytical chemistry: chromatography

Full name is 'Analisi chimica strumentale mediante distribuzione tra fasi'.
http://sito.cineca.it/murst-daus/settori97/sett_c.htm

'Analisi chimica strumentale' is divided into three methods: 1. Metodi elettroanalitici. 2. Metodi basati sull'emissione e sull'assorbimento di radiazioni elettromagnetiche. 3. Metodi basati sulla distribuzione tra fasi

In English, it looks like instrumental analytical chemistry involves the three methods of electrochemistry, spectrometry and chromatography.
