The pre-concentrator(s) are dewatering devices that are utilized to perform the initial separation of the protein from the whole stillage stream. The pre-concentrator consists of rotating dewatering paddles inside a wedge wire bowl. The feed is introduced into the pre-concentrators and immediately the paddles accelerate the mash to the paddle rotational speed. The mash is dewatered using centrifugal action which produces a centrate free or large particles and a cake. The screen size is chosen to maintain a level that will allow the protein fraction to pass through the wedge wire housing where it is collected and sent to the protein collection tank. The fiber in the pre-concentrator discharges out the end section and is then sent to the fiber slurry tank.
Whole stillage from the whole stillage tank is sent to the pre-concentrator utilizing the whole stillage transfer pump. A new flow controller will be installed that will be controlled to maintain a level in the whole stillage tank. The whole stillage will enter the feed nozzle of the pre-concentrator. The overs from the pre-concentrator which contain the fiber and remaining protein are then discharged from the overs spout into the fiber slurry tank. The fiber slurry tank is sized to allow for approximately 30 minutes of retention time. This tank will act as an equalization tank to ensure the fiber dewatering centrifuges have a consistent flow. Fiber slurry tank will be equipped with a level transmitter and will be vented to the existing plant vent system.
The trough’s from the pre-concentrator which contain the protein, oil and water flow by gravity to the protein collection tank.
The fiber slurry tank pump will then transfer the fiber/protein stream to the protein dewatering decanters.

1.2 Pre-Concentrator(s) – Initial Protein Separation Step
The fiber dewatering centrifuges are used to separate the protein from the pre-concentrated whole stillage stream. The centrifuges are horizontal decanters with open bowls and internal screens. The centrifuges have two internal washing sections. The centrifuge bowl is made up of two sections, the internal scroll and the outer bowl. The scroll and bowl are designed to allow a counter current wash of the fiber as well as dewatering of the fiber prior to drying. The scroll and bowl are rotating devices that utilize centrifugal forces to separate the different particles based on density.
Feed from the fiber slurry tank is sent to three (2) FQFC Filtration Centrifuges. Each centrifuge is equipped with a flow control valve and meter. The level in the fiber slurry tank will be used to control the flow to the filtration centrifuges. Centrifuge #1 & #2 will operate with a fixed feed flows to maintain level in the fiber slurry tank. Feed will be introduced into the feed nozzle which will deliver the feed to the scroll feed section. Wash water will be introduced into the wash water nozzle, see wash water description below.
As the feed enters the centrifuge, the solids are slowly transferred to the discharge end via the internal scroll. As the solids pass down the length of the bowl they are dewatered. The fiber bed inside the scroll also acts as a fine fiber block to help remove the fine fiber particles. The dewatered fiber discharges through the outlet spout and into a fiber collection conveyor where it is transferred to the existing DDGS mixing system.
The liquid fraction of the feed which contains the desired soluble protein fraction is subjected to high g-forces and passes through the perforated bowl and discharges through the first section of the bowl. This liquid fraction is the collected and is sent to the protein collection tank.
Wash water is introduced into the second section of the scroll. Here the clean water washes the protein fraction off of the fiber fraction. This water/protein stream passes through the bowl and discharges from the second section discharge nozzle. This stream is collection is the wash water tank and recycled back to the centrifuge feed section to recover the washed protein. The liquid fraction contains the protein fraction, oil and water.
The centrifuges utilize variable frequency drives (VFD’s) to control the speed of the scroll and bowl. The machines can be controlled by two separate control strategies, load control or differential speed control.
