Best to keep it simple. A more literal ttanslation would sound like too much of a circumlocution in English.

: You're right: simple is better. But at least in theory, such credits may not consist of taxes (e.g., court/legal fees following a lawsuit). After all, the source text doesn't read "mancato pagamento di imposte", and it itself uses a circumlocution.
