German term

liegen schlecht

German to English Bus/Financial Real Estate
Does this mean in poor condition or in a bad location?

Gebaeude 1 und Gebaeude 2 liegen schlecht und sollten verkauft worden. Alle anderen Objkete sind in ordentlichen Zustand und sollten gehalten werden.

Note: First I thought poorly located, but then I when I saw that the others were "ordentlichen Zustand" I thought it might refer to the condition. Now I'm thoroughly confused.

locations is that bad that they don't care about the condition

I can see why this is confusing, but "liegen schlecht" just can't mean in poor condition. The only other meaning of "liegen schlecht" that I can think of is if the author refers to a ranking. Quite unlikely, but not impossible. Overall, I think the location is bad enough that the owner doesn't even care about the condition while the other buildings are in good shape and at a decent location.

Here\'s an example from the web: Gerade modernisiert ist die Grundschule Dankersen, doch der Standort liegt schlecht [singular, not plural. This counts ;-)].
http://www.mt-online.de/schulen/schulseite2-0611.pdf

FWIW here\'s what http://wortschatz.uni-leipzig.de has to say:
* Synonyme: aufhalten, ausruhen, befinden, behagen, daliegen, dämmern, dösen, entsprechen, erheben, erstrecken, hinziehen, lagern, langliegen, pennen, rangieren, ruhen, schlafen, schlummern, stehen, verhalten, zurücklassen
* ist Synonym von: befinden, daliegen, sein
* wird referenziert von: lagern

None of the synomyns indicates that liegen can refer to a bad condition.

This text was really bizarre because it is the minutes of a meeting of international investors held in Texas in English and recorded by a German. The original words probably were something like "in a bad way" and the secretary misinterpreted it, but I'm not going to "improve" on the text."

Reading the second part of the sentence I feel it should mean 'bad condition'.

the location is so bad that they don't care what condition the building /buildings is in/are in

Slightly more grammatical/natural.

In view of zhdims answer above i would interpret \'liegen schlecht\' to refer to the location and \'schlecht liegen\' to refer to the condition but admit that this one IS a liiiiittle tricky.....

are in poor condition

Hi William,

I think you are right about the condition. I checked out a bunch of sites with the search "schlecht liegen" and other grammatical permutations thereof, and many of them indicate that the item in question is in poor condition, is no good, etc.

Hi everyone,

Wow! Quite a bit of interest on this one. I understand your misgivings on \"poor condition\", counterintuitive as it is. But if it means that the property is in a bad location, we are imputing to the author such an illogical mode of thought to the author that it stretches the mind, even to translators (as we all are) who have seen texts so poorly written that they make you want to cry. Does it make any sense at all for an appraiser to say, \"these two are in a bad location, but the others are all in good condition and should be kept.\"? No, none.

If anyone can come up with a single sentence from the Internet or type one in from a book that clearly indicates that \"schlecht liegen\" means to be in a poor location, then I will stand corrected.

I think \"schlecht liegen\" is being confused with the phrase \"schlecht gelegen sein\", which means to be in a poor location. \"Das Haus ist schlecht gelegen\" is what the author would have said.

NZZ Ratsberichterstattung - ... Markus Knauss (gp.) erklärt, das Schulhaus ist schlecht gelegen, und es hat im Umkreis wenig Kinder. Das Postulat ist abzulehnen. ...
www.stadt-zuerich.ch/kap01/gemeinderat_stzh/ nzz_ratsberichterstattung/051000.htm

So, I can only find refs in the Internet that show that it means poor condition, be no good, etc. Also - Der Sattel liegt schlecht, etwas liegt schlecht in der Hand, etc. These mean that they don\'t fit, that they are unwieldy. They don\'t mean that they are in a poor location.

I am fully aware that I will get a face full of disagrees, but before you do click that button that no one likes to see, please just show me one or two refs that show that it means \"to be in a bad location\", bearing in mind that \"ist schlecht gelegen\" is a different form than \"schlecht liegen\", as addressed above.

Ciao...

neutral Will Matter : the text says 'liegen schlecht' not 'schlecht liegen' see below

Hi willmatter! Thanks for the pointer. As I mention above, though, I tried every possible permutation of "schlecht liegen", which is, of course, how it would appear in a dictionary entry. Point was, I was trying to get looks at different ways it is used.
neutral Christel Saxton : it's actually the same
6 hrs
agree Boris Nedkov : I think that's the sense
6 hrs
disagree Klaus Herrmann : Hi Zhdim, ist schlecht gelegen, in schlechter Lage and liegen schlecht mean the same, irrespective of the different forms. I've added examples from the web to my answer, see below. To use your words, now you stand corrected :-)

I stand so completely corrected that I am astonished. My apologies to everyone for my misapprehension of the German language. Thank you, Klaus!
