Italian term
classe di omologazione
Italian to English
Tech/Engineering
Engineering (general)
Estinguisher
Uso estintore:
L’estintore deve essere utilizzato nel rispetto della classe di omologazione
I think that in this case omologazione would be inclusive of standardization, certification and approval = Homologation?
Or are these distinct aspects which do NOT sum up to Homologation?

class/type of fire for which it is approved
Combining elements of the first two answers, plus more.
Remember the classes are not classes of extinguisher but of fire, depending upon what is burning.
Are you translating to British, Australian or UK English ? Wikipedia explains the differences in these three countries. See this under "classification":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_extinguisher
Among other things it says:
Extinguishers are marked with pictograms depicting the types of fires that the extinguisher is approved to fight.

where it says
How can I be sure that the fire extinguisher I choose is approved for the type of fire that I need to extinguish?
All fire extinguishers must be (UL) Underwriters Laboratory approved. Underwriter’s laboratory is a nationally recognized testing laboratory that verifies compliance with applicable standards (29.CFR 1910.157(c)(2). Fire extinguishers that pass the tests are given an alpha numeric classification based on the type and size of the fire it will extinguish; ie. 3A:40B:C

classification
typically repetitive Italian term, which in English is used as one term.
If you want to stick to the source more closely then you could use certification class or classification

type approval
Or simply *approval* although I have also see *Type Test Approval*.
This is the process which decides on the fire extinguisher's rating which should be clearly marked on the actual extinguisher, i.e. what sort of fires it is suited to deal with basically.
