Kaderfunctionaris

Dutch to English Other Human Resources Job title/qualification
The qualification/position shown at the head of a Dutch diploma reads "Kaderfunctionaris dierenzorg". There is no other useful text-based context for "kaderfunctionaris", but the background is that the diploma was awarded to a 20-year-old on the basis of an examination following some 191 days of practical instruction and work placement with various veterinary clinics, horse breeders, "animal hotels", etc.

At the end of this I'm still no clearer as to what this young lady has actually qualified as, so any guidance at all with "kaderfunctionaris" would be most welcome.

Discussion

Martin Purdy (asker) Jan 25, 2013:
Thanks to all - job is not OTD yet but I will be sure to adjust the final entry here to include "dierenzorg" if the system will let me.
writeaway Jan 25, 2013:
Please my remark below where I already mentioned the importance of including dierenzorg since there are many other fields/options with kaderfunctionaris. I also took dierenzorg into account when I answered. And provided NL references to confirm what it is.
Alexander Schleber (X) Jan 25, 2013:
Phil Thanks for the confirmation. I have complained quite often about answers that take off on the context. It simply means that someone else searching for such a term may end up using the wrong translation.
philgoddard Jan 25, 2013:
Alexander is right that your question header and glossary entry should read "kaderfunctionaris dierenzorg", since kaderfunctionaris on its own means something different.
Kitty Brussaard Jan 25, 2013:
FWIW The 'Kaderfunctionaris Dierenzorg' seems to be the name of a vocational education programme (at level 4 of the Dutch MBO system) that used to be offered exclusively by the Groenhorst College in Barneveld. It now seems to be known as 'Paraveterinair Dierenartsassistent'. See also http://www.groenhorstcollege.nl/mbo/kies-een-opleiding/Diere...
writeaway Jan 25, 2013:
Imo it should have a safe translation and not some unnecessary never-ending explanation.
You can include the NL but I'd suggest providing some sort of translation. The NL websites seem clear enough. No need to make a complicated matter out of it. Having the NL there is ok to give a reference back to what it is, but leaving it in Dutch won't be very helpful or serve much purpose. Imo
Kitty Brussaard Jan 25, 2013:
Leave untranslated and add explanation in English I think it would be safest to retain the wording of the original Dutch qualification and add an explanation in English. Please note that the "Kaderfunctionaris dierenzorg" refers to a qualification at level 4 of the Dutch MBO/mbo. See also the Nuffic glossary http://nufficglossary.nuffic.nl/:

Now called 'secundair beroepsonderwijs'. MBO training courses are offered at four levels of difficulty: 1) assistant training (assistentenopleiding), 2) basic vocational training (basisberoepsopleiding), 3) vocational training (vakopleiding), and 4) management training (middenkaderopleiding).
Alexander Schleber (X) Jan 25, 2013:
What I meant is ... The answer should be for "kaderfunctionaris", unless you want to change your request to "kaderfunctionaris dierenzog". In that case, the answer would be "vetinary office assistant" IMO, especially since the person does not appear to have had vetinary medical training.

Martin Purdy (asker) Jan 25, 2013:
Makes sense, thank you for the further comment and suggested translation. "Paraveterinary worker" seems broad enough to cover what looks to be something of an umbrella term in Dutch. I have found a similar example to yours below:

Paraveterinair dierenartsassistente
1998 – 2002
Kaderfunctionaris Dierenzorg/Paraveterinair niveau 4
Bezitster van dit diploma voldoet aan de eis van: algemene ondernemersvaardigheden, als omschreven in het Vestigingsbesluit Bedrijven, de opleiding bedoeld in art. 9 eerste deel onderdeel a, van het Besluit Paraveterinairen
writeaway Jan 25, 2013:
Kaderfunctionaris dierenzorg imo the actual field the diploma is in matters. The translation may depend on it-kaderfunctionaris is a qualification that can be obtained in a variety of fields (construction, etc.). So the field may determine the translation....
Martin Purdy (asker) Jan 25, 2013:
Thanks - looks like I need a formal-sounding expression for "Girl Friday" ...

neutral Alexander Schleber (X) : If anything then "paravetinary assistant"! The person has had no vetinary medical training.

agree philgoddard : Spot on. Veterinary assistant is another possibility.

yeah, was sort of leaving the choice of the other word to Asker. assistant, aide, etc.
agree Kitty Brussaard : See also my most recent discussion entry. This translation stays closest to the previous and current name of this programme (offered by the Groenhorst College).

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to all for their input on this. No feedback from client yet but will update in due course as appropriate."

office assistant / management assistant

kaderpersoneel = senior officials
functionaris =>> would seem to mean that the person has a lower than executive position.
I think it is wrong to include "vetinary" in the suggested translation. That's misleading!
Note from asker:
Thank you for your input on this question - however, the term is used in conjunction with "dierenzorg", so there is a veterinary connection; or are you suggesting - just to be sure I understand correctly - that the job is more administrative than practical (within the veterinary environment)?
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : any refs to back your assertions?? http://www.beroepeninbeeld.nl/beroep/kaderfunctionaris-uitvo... http://www.fundeon.nl/beroepen/kaderfunctionaris

These are not assertions - it's an informed and logical opinion. If you want to, a "paravetinary assistant" is also possible.
neutral philgoddard : You can't just ignore dierenzorg.

Of course not => so the question should be changed!

Animal care/welfare management

This is how I would translate it. This person is qualified to manage an animal care facility (administration, bookkeeping, managing workflow, etc.). In the Dutch education system students sometimes get separate 'certificates' for different subject that are part of a larger program.

In English you are more likely to see the name of the study program rather than the name of the profession (see some examples below).
this applies.

After all the discussion I think this is best.
